The phonics screening check will take place during the week beginning Monday 8 June 2026. It’s a short, one-to-one check where children read 40 words (a mix of real and made-up “alien” words) to a familiar adult in school. Its purpose is simply to see how confidently children can use phonics to decode words and to identify anyone who may benefit from extra support—there is no pressure or formal test environment. If children did not meet the expected standard in Year 1, they will have another opportunity in Year 2. At home, the best support is keeping reading relaxed and positive: share books regularly, practise sounding out unfamiliar words together, and reassure your child that it’s fine not to know every word—they are just showing what they can do.
The multiplication tables check will take place within a two-week window starting Monday 1 June 2026. Children complete this online check in a calm, low-key setting, answering a series of quick multiplication questions up to 12 × 12. It is designed to check recall fluency rather than problem-solving, and schools can ensure children are comfortable and supported throughout. You can help at home by building confidence with short, regular practice—chanting tables, using TT Rockstars, or asking quick-fire questions in everyday moments (like car journeys). Keeping it fun and pressure-free makes a big difference, as confidence and familiarity are key.
The KS2 assessments will take place from Monday 11 May to Thursday 14 May 2026. These national tests in reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and maths are carried out in a structured but supportive environment, with teachers able to provide appropriate adjustments and breaks where needed. While these assessments help inform secondary transition and national data, they are only one part of a much bigger picture of each child’s learning journey. The most helpful support at home is ensuring your child feels calm and prepared: maintain normal routines, encourage good sleep, offer gentle revision in small chunks, and remind them that effort matters more than perfection. Confidence, wellbeing and a positive mindset will help them approach the week feeling ready.
